About

Dave Schnupp is a Brooklyn-based painter and product designer working primarily with acrylic and ink. His paintings are created through a process of pouring, spraying, and layering color, allowing the materials to move naturally across the canvas.

Working from his rooftop in Brooklyn, he draws inspiration from music, emotion, and the relationship between contrasting visual environments.

Continuum is his current body of work, exploring how opposing emotions and visual experiences can exist together. The paintings presented here are part of Series I, created in 2026, and are available for exhibition and purchase.

Artist statement

I've always been interested in how color can express emotions that are difficult to put into words. Some feelings are intense, chaotic, and overwhelming. Others are quieter, softer, and more peaceful. Continuum is my way of exploring both, and everything that exists between them.

Music plays a big role in how I experience emotion and how I paint. I've always been drawn to the contrast between hard techno and opera, and how both can move me in completely different ways. I paint to the rhythm of the music, allowing its energy to guide the process. Sometimes it's fast and chaotic; other times it's slow and peaceful. Those shifts come through in the color, movement, and texture of each piece.

My work is built through layers of poured and sprayed acrylic and ink. I tilt the canvas, let colors bleed into one another, and embrace the unexpected shapes and textures that emerge. There's intention behind the composition, but also a willingness to let the materials find their own direction.

Continuum, Series I explores two ends of an emotional spectrum. The darker works are dense and energetic, while the lighter pieces are softer and more atmospheric. I don't see one as positive and the other as negative. Both represent equally important parts of the human experience. One doesn't exist without the other, and neither tells the full story on its own.

  • DarkDense, chaotic, weighted toward violet and black.
  • LightSofter, atmospheric, weighted toward yellow and rose.

Process

Most of my work begins on my rooftop in Brooklyn.

I lay the canvases flat on the floor, and sometimes a folding table, and work with diluted acrylic and ink, building up layers through pouring, spraying, and tilting the surface. Water becomes another part of the process, allowing colors to bleed, pool, and blend naturally rather than staying within controlled shapes.

I usually start by experimenting on paper or cardboard, testing different color combinations and how the materials react before moving to a larger canvas.

The paintings often develop over several sessions. I let each layer dry in the sun before returning to add more color, texture, or contrast. Some pieces become denser and more complex over time, while others feel finished after just a few washes.

One of my favorite parts of the process is not knowing exactly how a painting will turn out. I can control the colors, the placement, and the amount of paint, but there's always an element of chance in how everything comes together.

Knowing when to keep working and when to leave something alone is just as important as the painting itself.
